AD 432 - 3D MODELING AND VISUALIZATION - assignments

Assignment 1 - object cloud compositions

Concept:

The arrangement of 3D objects has been taken up by artists and designers for generations. Considering the formal qualities of a dimensional object and how it relates to its space, position, scale, color, surface, environment and light, and its relationship to other elements can be carefully, gracefully and artistically undertaking to convey emotion, gravity, tension, rhythm, intimacy, dualities, and power.

The goal of this assignment is to begin working in 3D and getting familiar with Cinema 4D, its interface, navigation, object management, hierarchy, primitive objects and attributes, materials, lights, and rendering. Basically, a pathway throught the complete 3D workflow.

Design

Create 3 renders of "object clouds" composed of clusters, concentrations, groupings, organizations, arrangements, and layouts of primitive 3D objects manipulated into compositions with INFORMAL structures. Create a sense of tension, harmony, and balance with regard to the formal arrangement of objects. Create a harmonious and specific color scheme using materials and lighting.

Position 3D objects freely into compositions creating a balance of forms considering:
  • Direction of objects
  • Position
  • Scale
  • Space
  • Dominance
  • Emphasis
  • Concentration
  • Color - scheme
  • Light

Assignment:

  • Using C4D primitive/parametric shapes only, build a 3D composition using multiple objects considering forms, scale, color, space, light, and the point of view of the camera.
  • Construct and manipulate C4D primitives by changing parameters in the Attribute Manager,
  • Arrange primitive objects in a composition using the Move, Rotate, and Scale Tools to that carefully consider their relationships to a whole composition
  • Create Redshift Standard materials and apply to objects to control color, roughness, metalness, and transmission for each object.
  • Create lights for the scene and a background to the composition to position it in a unique space (lights and cameras discussed in class)
  • Render the composition in color (Render Settings discussed in class)
  • Use a minimum of 20 primitive objects in the scene
  • Make 3 variations of the composition that alter its overall theme (themes discussed in class)

Parameters

  • Object clouds should be made of primitive/parametric objects only. (they have to remain editable)
  • No primitive figure or landscape objects. Geometric objects only.
  • The focus is on abstract compositions. No figurative, symbols, text or recognizable subjects should be evident in each composition.
  • No modeling (ie. combining or overalapping shapes to make complex geometries). Shapes should remain in their primiteve geometric state.
  • Each object should have a Redshift material with customized color and shading attributes
  • Objects CAN touch but AVOID overlapping and intersecting objects in order to give them an autonomy and place in the "whole"
  • Use Redshift Standard Materials for different objects (materials discussed in class)
  • Use 1 Dome light (HDRs provided) and Area Lights, Point Lights, and Spot lights for lighting.

Format:

Execute 3 renders to caputre variations of the composition following Render Settings:

See the Render Guidelines for Resolution and Format (1920 x 1080) (TIFF)

What to Turn in:

  • You must turn in your C4D file. (If the C4D file is missing on the first submission, no points will be awarded for the assignment.)
  • Submit 3 render files in TIFF format
  • Place all files in a single folder and name the folder : FirstName_LastName_Objects
  • Compress the folder into a single file (ZIP, etc.) and upload to D2L before class on the due date.

Criteria For Grading and Evaluation:

Focus
